Curriculum & The Early Years Foundation Stage

The continual provision of the setting, in our younger and older room and outside area, supplemented with target activities, provides a stimulating and supportive environment for all children in our care and promotes respect for cultural diversity, equality of opportunities, inclusion and anti bias practice. We value the essential support and contributions that parents/carers and the wider community provide, and feel this all contributes towards enabling children to developing to their full potential in all areas of learning.

Our curriculum is based on the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) (DfE March 2012) and we are committed to upholding and providing the standards this sets out. Our aim is to exceed these wherever possible.

The EYFS sets out a principled approach to childcare and education, a unique child, positive relationships, enabling environments and learning and education. We believe that these principles enshrine every aspect of our provision and flow throughout our ethos, aims and objectives.

‘Children are born ready, able and eager to learn. They actively reach out to interact with other people, and in the world around them. Development is not an automatic process, however. It depends on each unique child having opportunities to interact in positive relationship and enabling environment.’ (EYFS page 2)

It is this philosophy that our staff team follow as they build relationships with and observe their key children, identifying their interests and level of development. This information helps us to enable their environment and plan future activities and experiences that will enhance their development.

Running alongside the principle of The EYFS are characteristic of learning, which help to identify how children learn and how we can best facilitate this, and seven areas of learning and development outlining expected progress towards early learning goals (the knowledge, skills and understanding which young children should have acquired by the end of the academic year in which they reach the age of five). We observe children in these areas and plan a curriculum that will help them all to develop to their full potential.

Each of these areas for learning contain smaller headings and the EYFS lays out sound advice and guidance for practitioners on how they link to its principle, development matters, what to look for when observing, effective practice and planning and resourcing.

The EYFS places great value on children’s ability and opportunity to learn through play and we believe children learn best when they are happily engaged in play that interests, stimulates and challenges them. Through play, exploration and investigation children learn and develop in all areas. Play helps them fit into the world physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially, and grow to be a healthy and competent individual. We provide children with a stimulating environment; where playing and learning go hand in hand and positive relationships are forged. The staff team ensure that provision is made for each individual child’s unique and specific needs and abilities.
